Online "ICT Degrees" like 'Computer Sciences' - are they useful?
With today's fast and harried pace, in addition to the benefits of electronic and digital connectivity, it only seems logical that online ICT degrees like Computer Sciences would be useful. Like other high demand courses, prestigious universities are making the move to offer Computer Science degrees on the internet as well. Distance learning is becoming more and more popular and there are plenty of reasons why students of all ages would support the programs.
Despite the fact that online ICT degrees are useful, there are a few drawbacks of which you should be aware before enrolling in a program and sending your money.
- Legitimate online ICT degrees are not much cheaper than physical learning degrees. Although it is a little cheaper for the college to have you study at home, the university does not discount their online programs to bargain basement prices. If you see that someone is offering programs well below the average, then you know something is wrong. Perusing legitimate online universities, we found that a one-year Computer Science degree program could cost as much as $15,000 US.

There are three levels of distance learning degrees offered in the US.
- First, are the diploma mills. These crooks steal your money in return for a piece of paper. Obviously this is totally useless if you plan to get a job in the ICT field. Your first day on the job will prove you cannot code anything.
- Second, there are higher learning institutes which are licensed by a state government but are not accredited by any learning organization. While these educational institutes are in fact legitimate and some offer very serious and rigorous training, there remains the fact, that degrees from those institutes are not necessarily viewed in a positive light by potential employers.
- Third, are the online universities who are fully accredited by a proper body such as the IAO (International Accreditation Organization). Needless to say Ivy League universities and others that are already known to be excellent educational institutes will be great places from where you can obtain a useful Computer Science degree.

- Many people are already working for companies and they want to upgrade their skills and better their chances for advancement. Likewise, if their present jobs are lost, they can apply for an ICT position elsewhere.
- If you know for sure that you want to work for a large software business, having a Computer Science degree is going to be beneficial. The company owners are probably going to demand the degree as a basic hiring requirement.
- You are taken more seriously in the IT field if you have some form of educational credentials. Saying that you have a degree in English or History, even if you have learned a lot about information technology, is just going to look odd. An online degree is a way for you to get a second degree while at the same time you can focus on finding a job.
- Many past graduates say that having the online computer science degree helped them to write better code.
